British Columbia is a North American leader in forest certification. Many forest companies, large and small, have either achieved or are pursuing certification under one or more systems. Forest certification is seen as one component of the overall provincial commitment to the goal of sustainable forest management.

Canadian Sustainable Forestry Certification Coalition

To promote the use of internationally recognized sustainable forest management certification standards in Canada in order for Canadian producers to continually move towards sustainable forest management, secure a sustainable supply of raw material, and to ensure marketplace acceptance of Canadian forest products.

The Canadian Standards Association International

We test products for compliance to national and international standards, and issue certification marks for qualified products. Certification marks tell potential customers and users that a product has been evaluated by a formal process-involving examination, testing and follow-up inspection-and that it complies with applicable standards for safety and performance.

The Pan European Forest Certification

The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.

PEFC is a global umbrella organisation for the assessment of and mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes developed in a multi-stakeholder process. These national schemes build upon the inter-governemental processes for the promotion of sustainable forest management, a series of on-going mechanisms supported by 149 governments in the world covering 85% of the world's forest area.

Scientific Certification Systems

In the SCS Forest Conservation Program, SCS audits the practices of forest managers and certifies them under the Forest Stewardship Council's (FSC) standards and principles as "well managed." The forestry program also includes FSC chain-of-custody certification for companies who make wood products from certified forests.
